Finding connections by DNA matches

Join in!
Upload your family trees to the free platforms GEDmatch and FamilySearch, join the regional project groups, and collaborate with other genealogists.
And most importantly:
Do not lock away your research data.
Private, inaccessible family trees do not help anyone in DNA family research.
Only by making your data comparable with others do you have a real chance of finding common ancestors – even in generations far back in time.
DNA family research is a unique opportunity to explore your origins across many generations – and to find common ancestors as far back as the 10th generation.
However, this requires that you systematically research all ancestral lines and at least gain an overview of the family names of past generations on both the paternal and maternal side in order to make meaningful comparisons.
Most DNA matches go back at least eight generations and can affect any of the 128 lines in the 8th generation, 256 lines in the 9th generation, or even 512 lines in the 10th generation.
The key to DNA family research is therefore not to focus only on selected lines, but to include all available lines as far as possible. Equally important is sharing your research results transparently with other genealogists.
Platforms such as GEDmatch and FamilySearch offer free opportunities to:
- collaborate in regional project groups or family groups,
- upload your own family trees,
- and compare your DNA data with the trees of other researchers.
Take advantage of these free offers!
Upload your GEDCOM files to GEDmatch and the Collaborative Tree Projects (CETs) on FamilySearch to access their extensive analysis and comparison tools.
Researching hundreds of ancestral lines is a major challenge – and requires a lot of time for recording and maintaining family trees. FamGEN supports you with:
- automated search functions across all relevant genealogy portals,
- direct import of source data (e.g., FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, GEDBAS from CompGen) via “Copy & Paste” into GEDCOM files,
- and an API interface to FamilySearch, allowing you to maintain and retrieve data without duplicate work across multiple family tree systems.
Combined Use of Genealogy Tools
– Workflow for Automated Data Collection –
Using these six modules, genealogical data from different sources can be systematically collected, cross-checked, and transferred into structured GEDCOM files – forming the basis for collaborative projects and analyses in FamilySearch (Family Tree and CET projects) and GEDmatch (regional project groups).
